Good/Bad Website Smackdown: Sweetwater vs. Rondo Music      The website for Sweetwater has many characteristics that exemplify good Web design and function. The first is clarity in the site's purpose and design focus toward the visitor. Upon entering the home page of the site, the visitor will notice immediately that this site is about providing and marketing musical instruments and audio equipment. It clearly provides the ability for the user to quickly locate products based upon category or product name via search and/or category selection. Also, the site consistently uses a professional color palette and includes high quality images. This helps build confidence and credibility within potential customers who have an interest in either music or audio production.      One additional reason why Sweetwater is so successful is due to its high-quality content and usability. Each individual product page provides enough detail for a potential buyer to make an inf...

Technology Blog #4: Learning to Learn

Image
To me, Chapter 3 "Learning to Learn" in The Connected Educator makes clear the idea that true learning is a highly interactive, self-directed and collaborative process. To support the idea that people need to be viewed as "learners first," the chapter advocates that people should take full responsibility for their own professional development rather than rely strictly on traditional, non-interactive methods of education. The chapter supports its argument by introducing the idea of knowledge construction in terms of three interrelated levels of knowledge acquisition: knowledge for practice (the basic foundation level of knowledge), knowledge in practice (applied knowledge based upon direct practical experiences) and knowledge of practice (collaborative reflection and analysis resulting in new understanding or insights). Also, the chapter emphasizes the importance of developing learning connections within groups of learners that are willing to inquire, collaborat...

AutoCAD Smackdown https://youtu.be/_JTzmZxSVgA?si=iVyOPSmulWry91mZ AutoCAD is a powerful professional computer aided design (CAD) application from Autodesk. This means you can use it to create precise 2 dimensional drawings and 3 dimensional models for more advanced users. AutoCAD has been widely adopted in various industries. Such as in engineering, architecture and manufacturing; AutoCAD has enabled users to produce very accurate and efficiently designed technical plans. As a student pursuing a degree in Applied Physics, I could benefit greatly from using this software. This includes being able to visualize complex physical systems, develop experimental apparatuses, and create detailed schematics for my lab work. In addition, AutoCAD will allow you to model components, analyze spatial relationships of those components, and express ideas technically and graphically via high quality drawings. Additionally, as a future Structural Engineer or CAD Draftsman, AutoCAD would be the fou...

Technology Blog #3: Using Tools to Support Connected Learning

Image
Chapter 5 of "The Connected Educator" discusses the necessity of developing a robust personal learning network (PLN), which goes beyond just casual connections and instead focuses on collaborative growth and collective continuous learning. The authors explain that while connected educators certainly consume content, they also participate, contribute and reflect in their PLNs. The authors illustrate how digital tools allow individuals to connect with expertise, share ideas and solve problems together, thereby allowing professionals to avoid isolation and build intentional relationships that both expand their thinking and provide opportunities for new skills to be developed. Ultimately, the chapter establishes connection as an ongoing mindset -- one of continuous professional learning and support for one another.     This chapter has direct relevance to how I will have to work as a future CAD Drafter/Structural Engineer in a rapidly evolving and very technical indu...

Technology Blog #2: Building Your Connected Learning Community

Image
In addition to the importance of building a PLN, the chapters' emphasis on designing a community, and shared leadership has similarities to the collaborative nature of structural engineering projects. Due to the complexity of large scale construction projects, they require the coordination of multiple stakeholders including architects, engineers, contractors, and drafters. Many companies use collaborative BIM environments that are facilitated by organizations such as Autodesk to create shared models and workflow processes. Similar to the concept of a community providing depth, through co-creation, and mutual accountability, I would be able to provide value back to my profession, by contributing to the community through sharing my own drafting efficiencies, assisting others with modeling problems, or mentoring newer team members.     Chapter Six of "The Connected Educator" emphasizes the creation of a personal learning network (PLN), and the creation of a co...
